How Veterans Are Affected by Asbestos Exposure in Military Service

For decades, U.S. military veterans have faced an invisible threat that has claimed thousands of lives — asbestos exposure. From the 1930s through the 1980s, asbestos was widely used in ships, bases, vehicles, and barracks. Today, many veterans are only now discovering the devastating effects of that exposure: mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.

How and Where Exposure Happened

Asbestos was valued by the military for its heat resistance and durability. Unfortunately, this same material releases dangerous microscopic fibers when disturbed. Veterans who served in the Navy, Army, Air Force, or Marines were frequently exposed — especially those working as shipbuilders, mechanics, pipefitters, or engineers.

Shipyards were among the highest-risk environments. Navy veterans who maintained boilers, insulation, or engine rooms inhaled fibers daily. Even decades later, these fibers can remain in the lungs and eventually lead to mesothelioma.

How Veterans Are Affected by Asbestos Exposure

Why Veterans Are Still at Risk

Although asbestos use declined after the 1980s, veterans continue to be diagnosed with mesothelioma today due to the disease’s long latency period. Many cases arise 30–50 years after exposure, meaning those who served long ago are only now seeing symptoms.

Available Benefits and Legal Rights

Veterans diagnosed with mesothelioma may qualify for VA disability benefits, health care, and compensation from asbestos trust funds or lawsuits against negligent manufacturers. Importantly, filing a legal claim for mesothelioma does not affect your VA benefits. Both options can be pursued simultaneously.

How an Attorney Can Help

Experienced asbestos attorneys can identify which products or companies were responsible for your exposure — and many of these companies have already set aside funds to compensate mesothelioma victims. The Law Offices of Steven Gacovino, P.C. and our partners have experience helping veterans and their families access these resources and recover the justice they deserve.
